‘Every pull is poison’

The Canadian government is going to put a warning on every pack of cigarettes. It is the first of its kind in the world to raise awareness about smoking. The Health Organization of Canada said that this law is going to be effective from August 1.
According to this law, warnings like ‘Cigarettes cause cancer’ and ‘Every smoke is poison’ will be printed on each cigarette.
The Canadian government is taking this step with the aim of reducing tobacco consumption below 5 percent by 2035. Every year 31 May is celebrated as ‘World No Tobacco Day’. In an announcement Wednesday to mark the day, Health Canada said the new law will make it virtually impossible for people to avoid ‘health warnings’ placed on tobacco products.
The health agency estimates that by April 2025, if the new law takes effect, retailers will be selling cigarettes with the new warning on every label.
The Act requires that each individual cigarette, cigarillo, tube and other tobacco product packaging contain this health warning. A 75-day period for public comments on the law, which began last year, was set aside.
Meanwhile, Sweden is on the verge of becoming Europe’s first ‘smoke-free’ country. Less than 5 percent of the country’s population is defined as a daily smoker. Experts have been working on anti-smoking campaigns and legislation in the country for decades. Smokeless tobacco ‘snus’ is banned in the EU; But it is marketed in Sweden as an alternative to cigarettes. BBC.
