Europe is in a pre-war period: Polish Prime Minister

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk holds a conference on war.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned in an interview with European media that the continent was in crisis “a pre-war period” in the context of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He also spoke of further armed conflicts around the world that have intensified in recent months.

In recent weeks Russia stepped up bombings against Ukraine, Poland’s eastern neighbor. and one of its missiles briefly flew over the airspace of this NATO and European Union (EU) member country.

I don’t want to scare anyone, but war is no longer a thing of the past. “It is a reality and it started more than two years ago with the invasion of Ukraine,” Tusk said in an interview with an alliance of European newspapers.

“The most worrying thing now is that literally any scenario is possible. We have not experienced a situation like this since 1945,” argued the Polish Prime Minister.

I know it sounds devastating, especially for the younger generation, but we have to mentally adapt to a new time. We are in a pre-war period. “I’m not exaggerating,” he added.

Poland has been one of Kiev’s main supporters in the EU since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.

“If Ukraine loses, no one in Europe will be able to feel safe,” warned Tusk, who was president of the European Council (2014-2019), one of the EU’s most important institutions.

The Prime Minister also stated in the interview that Europe still has “a long way to go” in defense and that it must be “independent and self-sufficient” in this area.
