Óscar Gil, a resident of Selva de Mar (Barcelona), is usually seen walking through the Poblenou Park with his Great Dane. “How are you, neighbor?” He greets familiar faces after living in Barcelona for three years. He arrived in the midst of a pandemic after training at Elche in exchange for 500,000 euros and in these three courses he is on his way to exceeding 90 games with the Espanyol shirt. This Tuesday he was the protagonist of a video in which Jordi Alba and Ferran Torres mocked him during Espanyol-Barça.
“Óscar is hurt by the defeat and worried about the team’s situation,” they explain from their surroundings. “He was not aware of those comments, he was for the game, he is a professional,” they add, taking iron away from the matter. Curiously, Jordi Alba and Óscar Gil share a representation agency.

The right-back is one of the most loved players by the Espanyol dressing room that has supported him throughout the course, although it has not been the best season for the young player, silver medalist in Tokyo 2021 and international (he played that match against Lithuania in 2021 in which the absolutelike Alba, were absent due to the COVID-19 outbreak). Surpassed by Alejandro Balde in the first two goals, the man from Elche has been one of the defensive weaknesses of a Espanyol whose system hasn’t helped Gil either.
The first two seasons with Vicente Moreno, with a more solvent Espanyol in defense and with a more protected right-back, Gil established himself on the right, endorsed by Francisco Rufete in sports management who hired him for his extraordinary physical values. Last year he played 22 games in which the parakeet team received 29 goals (1.5), figures lower than the current ones. The 2-1 victory against Real Madrid at the RCDE Stadium, with an efficient marking of Vinicius Júnior, was undoubtedly one of their best matches.
This season has been different for the winger, who has suffered on the right side against the best wingers in the championship. He has played 28 games and has been in all the victories, starting with Diego Martínez and now with Luis García, always ahead of Ronael Pierre-Gabriel, Rubén Sánchez, Aleix Vidal or Omar El Hilali. More exposed in demanding matches, without as much help as the previous year, things are not turning out for Gil like many first team players. The squad embraces him to recover his best version in these four games.
