Erika Kirk Recounts Seeing Slain Husband Charlie Kirk’s Body

Erika Kirk, the widow of the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk, recently shared the heartbreaking moment she saw her husband’s body. He was shot and killed on September 10, 2025, at Utah Valley University. It was his first stop on a national tour.

“His eyes were partly open,” Erika, 36, told The New York Times in her first interview since the tragedy. It was published on Sunday, September 21. Charlie was 31 years old.

She went on to describe his expression. “He had that knowing half-smile, like the Mona Lisa,” Erika added. “As if he died happy. Like Jesus had rescued him. The bullet hit, he blinked, and he was in heaven.”

Erika had planned to join her husband in Utah. However, she stayed in Arizona to help her mother. Her mother was getting medical care at a hospital in Phoenix. Erika was with her mom when Charlie’s assistant, Michael McCoy, called. “He screamed, ‘He’s been shot!'” she recalled.

The mother of a 3-year-old daughter and a 1-year-old son boarded her husband’s chartered plane. She was heading to Provo, Utah. That’s when she heard the news. Charlie had been pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

“I’m looking at the clouds and the mountains,” she told The New York Times. “It was a beautiful day, and I thought, ‘This is exactly what he saw last.'”

Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was speaking to a large group of college students. This was on September 10 when he was shot in the neck. A video online showed Kirk answering a question about gun violence. He was shot from almost 200 meters away, authorities believe.

Erika told The New York Times that a sheriff met her at the hospital. Her husband had been declared dead there. She wanted to see Charlie’s body. The sheriff warned her against it. He said the bullet had “shattered” Charlie’s neck.

“With all due respect,” she recalled telling the sheriff, “I want to see what they did to my husband.”

Two days after the shooting, authorities arrested a 22-year-old suspect. He turned himself in. Before his arrest, the FBI released photos and videos of him. His parents identified him. Despite claims from many politicians, including the President, authorities have found no evidence linking the suspect to any left-wing groups.

“Everything points so far to this being a guy who did something really bad because Kirk’s ideology was personally offensive to him,” a person close to the investigation told NBC News on Saturday, September 21.

Erika also shared with The New York Times a bittersweet detail. She couldn’t give her husband a goodbye kiss when he left home that morning. She gave him one last kiss that afternoon, as she saw his body.
