Ecuadorian authorities assert that Jorge Glas decomposed due to “his refusal to eat.”

Ecuador’s prison authorities reported Monday that former Vice President Jorge Glas fell ill in recent hours because he “refused to eat food” given to him by staff at the prison where he was held following his arrest in Mexico Embassy was detained, had provided Quito, last Friday.

Glass was urgently transferred from the maximum-security La Roca prison near Guayaquil to a hospital in the city, with various versions including an alleged drug overdose.

The text states that Glas “suffered possible decompensation because he refused to eat food provided by the civil service in the last 24 hours.”

The facility reported that the former vice president will remain in the hospital for “observation” at the health center for several more hours and that he is “stable.” After the control measures, the former officer will be returned to the Deprivation of Liberty Center.

Concern about the health of glass

Jorge Glas’s lawyer, Andrés Villegas Pico, said in a statement released Monday afternoon that Daniel Noboa’s government must “respond for the health of his client” and blamed the current president for the situation.

Glass, 54 years old and Vice President of Ecuador between May 2013 and January 2018, during the presidencies of Rafael Correa and Lenín Moreno, had been in the embassy since December 17, 2023, when he asked for entry and protection and said he was “fearful” of the expressed his security and personal freedom,” as confirmed by the Mexican government at the time.

The former vice president is serving preventive detention in the “Reconstruction of Manabí” case, in which he is accused of the alleged crime of embezzlement. In addition, he has two sentences that were unified in the Odebrecht and Bribery cases, namely for illicit association and bribery, respectively.
