Ecuador: a key minister of Guillermo Lasso resigns

The Minister of Government (Interior) of Ecuador, Alexandra Vela (Photo)resigned from his position due to discrepancies with the president William Lasso, around the possibility of calling a “death crusade” in the National Assembly (Parliament), with an opposition majority. “Not coinciding with the political line established by President Guillermo Lasso to face the crisis exacerbated by the Ecuadorian Assembly, I submitted my resignation,” Vela wrote on his Twitter profile. Likewise, he ratified that “preserving democracy to transform the country requires applying the mechanism of cross death,” Vela added in his message. The “cross death” is a mechanism contemplated in the Constitution of Ecuador with which the president can dissolve the Assembly and in exchange govern by decrees until new early elections are held, from which a new Legislative which must ratify or repeal any decrees issued by the head of state. Vela’s resignation came shortly after the Government’s counselor and spokesman, Carlos Jijón, also presented his resignation from the post.

A “risky” path

In her resignation letter, which she accompanied in her message on Twitter, Vela assured that the “cross death” mechanism is for her a “risky path, but at the same time unavoidable, if you want to carry out the deep transformations that Ecuador requires in the social, political and economic fields, according to the program offered to Ecuadorians”. Lasso thanked Vela for having accompanied himbut noted that your government will continue to work to protect democracy and the creation of opportunities for Ecuadorians. “I appreciate your efforts,” confirmed the president, noting that the government he leads “will continue to work permanently for the well-being of citizens, the protection of democracy and the creation of a country of opportunities and safety for all.” This Wednesday the Ecuadorian government announced that the until today assemblyman Francisco Jimenez will be the new Minister of the Government of Ecuador, after the resignation of Vela. Jiménez, member of the governor’s bench BELIEVE in the legislature, it becomes the fourth assemblyman who leaves his bench to join the Executive.
