Earthquake death toll exceeds 4,300, Turkish president declares 7-day state mourning

The death toll from the catastrophic earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria yesterday has continued to rise and the death toll has exceeded 4,300.

According to ARY News, the death toll from the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria yesterday morning is continuously increasing and so far 4,300 people have died while more than 20,000 people have been injured. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced a week of official mourning across the country.

Aid organizations say that all the towns, villages and cities on the border between Turkey and Syria have become piles of rubble, there are scenes of destruction everywhere and tall buildings have collapsed in moments. Rescue work is going on to search for human lives in the affected areas.

The death toll in Turkey has reached 2,951 and 15,800 are injured, according to Yunus Cezer, head of the Turkish Disaster Services. Ten cities of Turkey have been devastated by the earthquake. There are piles of debris over a wide area. The telecommunications system has also been severely affected due to the collapsed property and the rescue workers are facing difficulties in communication.

Meanwhile, 1451 deaths have been confirmed in Syria so far, while around 2500 people have been injured.

According to the Syrian News Agency, 711 people have died in Syrian-controlled areas, while more than 750 people have died in rebel-controlled areas.

After yesterday’s devastating earthquake of 7.8 magnitude, earthquakes were felt two to three times in Turkey and Syria, while 150 aftershocks have occurred due to which more buildings have collapsed in many cities.
