Dozens of people march in Rome with candles in memory of the Holocaust

Dozens of people commemorated today in Rome the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust with a march in which they carried candles and in which they asked that episodes in history like this not be repeated.

The procession started at 6:00 p.m. local time (5:00 p.m. GMT) in the Roman square dell’Esquilino, when dozens of people gathered to remember the victims of Nazism and condemn the massacres perpetrated in the name of the purity of the raceand was advancing through some central streets of the Italian capital.

The attendees were of all ages, they carried some Italian flags and large newspaper clippings denouncing the "Extermination of Roma and Sinti children"but also posters and banners on which you could read "Association of Partisans of Italy".

The words in memory of the victims of the Holocaust took place this Thursday in Italy and Pope Francis asked to instill in the new generations the "awareness of the horror of this black page of history".

"It is necessary to promote in the new generations the awareness of the horror of this black page of History, to build a future in which human dignity is never trampled on again"Jorge Bergoglio wrote in a message on social networks.

Also the Italian Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, asked not to forget: "Today we remember the horror of anti-Semitism and renew our collective commitment to stop any attempts to erase the memory. Remembering is a commitment for the present, a foundation for the future"he wrote in a statement.

The mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, stressed that on January 27, 1945, when the Soviet Army liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp, "the world was shown the horror of the Holocaust, all its atrocities, all its evil".
