On the back of the driving license, bottom left, you can see a small number 12 so discreet and minimal that next to it there is a wide gap for a penalty of 200 euros. And for a doubt: the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) penalty fee who does it take contact lenses instead of glasses?

that section permit number 12 is the one that the DGT reservation to the codes, almost all harmonized with the European Union. A long string of numbers and their corresponding meanings: exceptions or nuances that delimit the driver freedom.

When attached to 12, code 78 (for example) indicates that the motorist can only drive cars without clutch pedal; the 105.1, which should never exceed 70 km/h.

Most of them have to do with sensory or motor disabilities: 03.01: hearing aid in one ear; 25.04: hand throttle. Fine for not wearing glasses

The most common is the first of all, so common that it is not an exception: 01. ‘Vision correction and protection’.

Who need the glasses (and so stated in your permit) must wear them compulsorily. Violating the rule is considered a serious offense, punishable by the traffic law with a fine of 200 euros, without withdrawal of points.

There is close to 1.5 million motorists in Spain that do not reach a 0.8 visual acuity, the limit of what opticians consider good vision. Almost 600,000 do not reach 0.5. Some, not even with corrective lenses.

Penalties multiply when stepped on the terrain of the subcodes, since the indication can be much more precise: since 2017, the license specifies whether the driver must use glasses or contact lenses or if you have a patch and still drive. The numerical details related to the view are seven.

The sixth of the codes opens the margin to drivers, since it allows exchanging glasses for contact lenses, and vice versa, but in the rest of the cases the drivers regulations is adamant.

Whoever gets behind the wheel or gets on a motorcycle must do so “subject to mentions, accommodations, restrictions and other limitations […] which, where appropriate, appear on the permit”. If a card indicates 01.02 and its holder wears glasses (instead of contact lenses), the penalty is also 200 euros.

Permits issued before January 1, 2017 show only generic 01, but they remain valid until their validity expires or the owner replaces them with any other procedure.

Renew the card after surgery

In addition to loss or theft, one of the reasons for replace the card of driving is a refractive surgery. That is, the elimination, by laser, of farsightedness, astigmatism or myopia.

According to the driving regulations, one month after the intervention (providing the corresponding report), the driving license can be obtained or extended with a maximum validity of one year. In the card, then, the code 01 will have already disappeared.

Twelve months later, you must re-evaluate the view: the driver recognition center will set the subsequent period of validity.
