Doctor says former Paraguayan president Lugo shows some positive signs

Paraguayan senator and former president Fernando Lugo, hospitalized in intensive care after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke, has begun to give "some positive signs" in his evolution, although he is still a patient of "critical care"said this Friday his doctor and left-wing senator, Jorge Querey.

The legislator, who belongs to the Guasu Front, the left-wing alliance that brought Lugo to the Senate in 2013, explained to journalists that on this day "probably" have the "first signs" and "positive indicators of evolution".

Lugo, 71, who ruled this country between 2008 and 2012, has been in the intensive care unit of the Migone Sanatorium since Wednesday, where he underwent emergency neurosurgery that ended early Thursday morning due to a "aggravation of bleeding".

The senator was initially rushed to another hospital in Asunción on Wednesday after he suffered a seizure while at the Congress headquarters.

"The first 24 hours were a process of progressive deterioration and interventions until we managed to control this situation. The second day was one of stabilization, the process was quite reasonable, and today we start with some positive signs regarding the evolution"explained his GP.

Specifically, he explained that they have already withdrawn the medication to maintain the political leader’s blood pressure and vital signs.

In addition, he indicated that the respiratory and oxygenation part of Lugo "is on the mend".

The doctor confirmed that they began to decrease the medication that keeps the legislator in an induced coma, so that "start breathing spontaneously" and points out that in "a period of hours or days" They can remove the respirator.

Querey clarified, however, that Lugo "remains a critical care patient" and with "risk of complications".

On the other hand, he refrained from anticipating possible sequels.

In a statement released later, the medical team reported that this Friday a tomography was performed on Lugo, in which it was observed "a resolution of the hematoma and an improvement of the cerebral edema".

He also announced that "decided to continue under sedation and strict monitoring for another 72 hours".
