Dina Boluarte after the raids in the Rolex case: Democracy is under attack

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte addressed a message to the nation on Saturday following raids on her home and the government palace in Lima as part of the Rolex case.

The President denounced that the search of her home was an “arbitrary, disproportionate and abusive” measure, since there was “never any denial or rebellion” on her part in the face of the ongoing investigation. “On the contrary, I appeared in this instance, named my lawyers and made myself available,” he said.

Boluarte condemned the “systematic” attacks he was facing, saying they were “attacking democracy and the governmental state,” leading to “political, social and economic instability” in the country.

This Friday, the Peruvian Ministry of State and the Department of High Complex Crime Investigations carried out a raid on the house of the Head of State and the House of Pizarro, an operation that lasted more than four hours. The organizations involved have not yet issued a statement on this.

From the Peruvian Presidency they confirmed that “the staff of the Government Palace provided all the facilities for the care requested by the Attorney General’s Office, which was carried out normally and without incident”. For his part, the president’s lawyer, Joseph Campos, described the prosecutor’s actions as “completely unconstitutional.”

The police operations are related to a court ruling on alleged illicit enrichment and Boluarte’s failure to disclose the use of luxury Rolex watches in official documents.

In mid-March, the president assured that everything she had was the result of her years of work. Likewise, he indicated last week that he was “not afraid” of the possible vacancy motion that would be filed against him in the Congress of the Republic due to the aforementioned scandal.
