Diego Simeone: He turns 10 this season at Atlético Madrid

Coach Diego “Cholo” Simeone will become this year the “dean” of the DTs in the Spanish league in his tenth consecutive year ahead of Atlético de Madrid, where he arrived in 2011 and a few days ago renewed his contract until 2024.

“Diego Simeone is unrivaled in the Spanish La Liga in terms of longevity as a coach on the bench,” said Mundo Deportivo newspaper, noting that “the one ‘chasing’ the Argentine is Alvaro Cervera, who has been in Cádiz since 2016, but only the two latest campaigns of the first division”.

Simeone will start the new season defending the championship he won a few months ago, with Atlético de Madrid, on May 22nd.

The Argentine coach is also the one with the best winning average in Atletico Madrid’s history (no one has won as much as he has) and only has Luis Aragonés as the coach with the most games directed.

Aragonés directed 612 times and Simeone 527 games. With these numbers, Simeone is 85 games away from equaling the “myth of the mattress” of Aragonés, something the Argentine could conquer in the 22/23 season.
