Death of Mahsa Amini in Iran: the Iranian president assures that “an investigation will be opened”

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said Thursday, September 22 that the death of Mahsa Amini, who provoked demonstrations in Iran, would be the subject of a “investigation”while specifying that the medical examiner’s report did not mention abuse by the police, which the demonstrators dispute.

“But I don’t want to jump to conclusions too quickly.”does he have told reporters on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. “If one of the parties has done wrong, it must certainly be investigated”added the Iranian president, saying he had “contacted the family of the deceased” and promised him “to diligently investigate the incident”.

Protests, in which at least 17 people have died according to state media reports, have erupted in Iran since authorities announced the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on September 16. She had been arrested for “wearing inappropriate clothes” by the morality police, responsible for enforcing the strict dress code in the Islamic Republic.
