Covid-19: the WHO warning about the lethality of the Omicron variant

The holder of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, issued a warning call: do not minimize the effects of omicron of covid. He argued that while this variant appears to be “less severe than the Delta, it does not mean that it should be classified as mild.”

The call for caution from the head of the UN body has a global echo in the face of the massiveness with which that variant of South African origin climbed in almost all countries and it brought the infection rates to a figure never seen before.

“Although Ómicron appears to be less severe compared to Delta, especially for vaccinated people, it does not mean that it should be classified as mild.”, said the specialist during his first press conference of the year.

In his address, he explained that “Like the previous variants, omicron causes hospitalizations and is killing people”, and warned that the level of infections “is overflowing health systems around the world.”

He also warned about the collateral effects of the pandemic: “Inequality in access to vaccines kills people”, while impacting employment and “undermines the global economic recovery.”

Access to vaccines

Faced with the outlook on the growing evolution of omicron, Tedros questioned that the pandemic ends the booster dose in few countries while “billions remain completely unprotected”.

In the ArgentinaFrom the records of the Public Vaccination Monitor, in Argentina 97,007,592 doses were distributed, of which 78,733,031 were applied. This allowed so far 33,292,978 people to complete their scheme, while 38,498,937 only inoculated the first dose and only 4,218,615 have the booster.

Alluding to the distribution of vaccines from rich to less developed countries, Tedros was blunt: “This pandemic will not end until we do”.

Contagion records

The head of the WHO also pointed out that last week some 9.5 million new infections were notified to the WHO for coronavirus, a record that was 71 percent more than the previous week.

In the framework of the evolution of Covid, at the time the WHO proposed that all countries have the 10 percent of its vaccinated population at the end of September 2021 and the 40 for December. However, of the 194 member states 92 did not reach that goal and 36 of them had not even vaccinated 10 percent of their population.

He also urged the world to spread vaccine doses more fairly in 2022. “The new year offers an opportunity to renew our collective response to a common threat and I hope that world leaders who have shown determination to protect their people will extend that determination to ensure that everyone is safe and secure, “he said.
