The update made the country surpass the United Kingdom, which totaled 63,506 deaths related to covid-19 and 1,809,455 cases of infection with the virus that causes the disease until Friday.
According to data released this Saturday by the Italian Ministry of Health, 19,903 new cases of contagion by the SARS-CoV-2 virus were also reported, when more than 1.8 million infections have been registered.
The 649 deaths confirmed today still represent a decrease compared to the numbers of Friday, in which there were 761 deaths associated with the covid-19, or of Thursday, when the total of deaths reached 887.
With this record, Italy returns to the top of the European countries hardest hit by the covid-19, after having already been the country in Europe most affected by the first wave of the pandemic in February, March and April. It is now the fifth country in the world with the most victims.
The United States is the country with the most deaths (295,539) and also with the most confirmed cases of infection (more than 15.8 million). Next in number of deaths are Brazil (180,437 dead, more than 6.8 million cases), India (142,628 killed, more than 9.8 million infected) and Mexico (113,019 dead, more than 1,2 million infected).
The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 1,595,276 deaths resulting from more than 71 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.
