Coronavirus: towards a fifth wave at the start of the school year?

Hospitalizations continue to climb in metropolitan France. As white plans multiply, many doctors expect the situation to worsen in mid-September.

After a summer marked by a decorrelation between the number of cases and hospitalizations, the impact of the Delta variant on hospitalizations seems to be approaching in metropolitan France. On Thursday, 840 people were hospitalized and 184 were admitted to critical care.

The number of deaths caused by Covid rose to 88 per day over the last week. This rise in the curve worries specialists, who also fear the consequences of the return to school.

“We expect an increase in contamination towards the end of August with the migration of holidaymakers to large cities and the resumption of school and university activities” estimates Professor Bruno Mégarbane, head of the intensive care unit at Lariboisière hospital. He fears a fifth wave which would therefore immediately follow the fourth.

To address these concerns, the government is insisting on vaccination. The goal is to reach 50 million first-time vaccines by the end of August.
