Controversial Indian court ruling 'Hijab not part of Islam'

New Delhi: An Indian court has upheld a controversial decision to uphold the ban on hijab in schools and colleges.

The Indian state of Karnataka’s High Court has heard five petitions filed by Muslim students seeking a ban on hijab in schools and colleges.

During the hearing of the case, the court, while delivering a controversial verdict, dismissed the petitions against the ban on hijab.

The court explained that it is not mandatory for women to wear hijab in Islam, therefore the ban on hijab will remain in schools and colleges.

The Karnataka High Court in a controversial decision said that the ban on uniforms was necessary and students could not object to it.

It may be recalled that in the last few months, a college in Karnataka had barred Muslim students from wearing hijab in college and school, after which other colleges also banned hijab.

Muslim students protested and staged a sit-in against the ban on hijab, after which the case was filed in the Karnataka High Court.
