Connor Esterhuizen destroys New Zealand as South Africa clinches T20 series

South Africa shattered an agonizing four-year away series drought on Wednesday, defeating New Zealand by 33 runs to clinch their five-match T20 series 3-2. The Proteas posted a formidable 187 for 4 before restricting the Black Caps to 154 for 8. This decisive victory in Christchurch secured a landmark bilateral series win for head coach Shukri Conrad and marked the team’s first series win on foreign soil since August 2022.

Connor Esterhuizen fueled the historic win with a brutal, career-best 75 runs off just 33 deliveries. He battered the New Zealand bowling attack from the moment he arrived at the crease at Hagley Oval. The visitors established their dominance early in the innings. Wiaan Mulder contributed 31 runs. Rubin Hermann added 39. But the true fireworks started when Esterhuizen took control.

He launched six sixes and five fours into the stands. Esterhuizen then forged an unbroken 61-run partnership with Dian Forrester, who finished unbeaten on 21. New Zealand simply could not match the required run rate. The South African bowling unit executed a suffocating game plan from the first over. Gerald Coetzee, Wiaan Mulder, and Ottniel Baartman systematically dismantled the Black Caps’ batting order. Each bowler claimed two wickets to restrict the hosts.

Esterhuizen took home Player of the Match and Player of the Series honors. He previously hammered 57 runs in the fourth match of the series just days prior, anchoring the South African middle order throughout the week. South Africa originally set the tone for this aggressive tour when they dominated the first T20, and they carried that exact blueprint into Wednesday’s decider.
