Cinema: “The last duel”, “Eiffel”, “Julie (in 12 chapters)” … these 3 films to see this Wednesday

“The last duel” by Ridley Scott, with Matt Damon, Adam Driver and Ben Affleck, the romantic drama “Eiffel”, and “Julie (in 12 chapters)” … Here are three feature films to discover at the cinema this Wednesday the 13th October.

“The Last Duel”, by Ridley Scott

Rape in medieval times. A last duel for the truth. More than forty years after his first film “Les duellistes”, also shot in Dordogne, the Briton Ridley Scott – who will be releasing “House of Gucci” in November – is bringing back to life with talent one of the greatest French legal cases which opposed , in 1386, the knights Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) and Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver). The first accused the second of having sexually abused his wife Lady Marguerite (Jodie Comer), who rebelled and demanded justice in the middle of the Hundred Years War. A condemnation of the patriarchy which resonates today at the time of the #MeToo movement.

Structured in three chapters which each show a different point of view (the husband, the accused and the victim), “The Last Duel” oscillates between great scenes of bloody fights and feminist revolts in the midst of a world of men whose honor is more important than anything. A feature film – one of the best of Ridley Scott – which is inspired by the work “The last duel: Paris, December 29, 1386” by Eric Jager published in 2004. “We were convinced that it was was an incredible story. The question was how to tell it in a compelling way. This is where we got the idea of the different perspectives. We have built a narrative that entices the viewer and leads them in a certain direction by devoting two-thirds of the film to the views of the events by the male characters before turning everything upside down and revealing that in fact Marguerite de Carrouges is the real one. heroine of all history ”, explains Matt Damon who also wrote the screenplay with Nicole Holofcener and Ben Affleck, his longtime friend who plays Count Pierre d’Alençon and with whom he wrote“ Will Hunting ”Oscar winner in 1997 .

“Eiffel”, by Martin Bourboulon

The Iron Lady still fascinates the 7th art as much as ever. As proof, the new feature film by Martin Bourboulon which honors the indestructible Eiffel Tower through the story of its engineer Gustave Eiffel, played by Romain Duris, and the thwarted love story he will have with Adrienne Bourgès, his love of youth embodied by the talented Emma McKay (revelation of the series “Sex Education”).

Author of the comedy “Daddy or mom” and its sequel, the filmmaker offers this time an epic show in costumes that shows that behind every great man, hides a woman. While he has just completed his work on the Statue of Liberty, Gustave Eiffel is approached by the French government to build a spectacular work on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition of 1889 which will take place in Paris. A project that many detractors, including bankers, a few workers, as well as Antoine de Restac (Pierre Deladonchamps), Adrienne’s husband, would like to see fail. More than a biopic, “Eiffel” is above all a romantic adventure that reveals the romantic and visionary side of its passionate hero.

“Julie (in 12 chapters)”, by Joachim Trier

The portrait of a tormented woman. In “Julie (in 12 chapters)”, the Norwegian director Joachim Trier looks at the life of a thirty-something in Oslo, intelligent, daring and curious about everything, but irresolute on a lot of subjects. Profession doctor? Psych? Photographer ? Children? No children? Loyal ? Unfaithful? Questions if not existential at least which call for those who tend to build a happy and fulfilled life, guided by relevant choices.

From chance encounters to irrevocable decisions, Julie (Renate Reinsve, Best Actress Prize at the Cannes Film Festival) seeks herself out by giving herself time to observe her entourage and her lovers.

Also to be discovered at the cinema this week the animated film “The Addams family 2: a hellish trip” and the thriller “The man from the cellar” with Bérénice Bejo, Jérémie Rénier and François Cluzet.
