China: an orderly containment in Zhengzhou, after an outbreak of Covid-19 cases and violent demonstrations

The situation is tense in Zhengzhou. The city in central China on Thursday, November 24, ordered the confinement of several neighborhoods due to an outbreak of Covid-19. Residents of the city center are no longer allowed to leave the area without a daily negative test and permission from local authorities. They are advised not to leave their homes “unless necessary”announced the municipal authorities.

Zhengzhou recorded 675 new Covid-19 infections, with a large majority of positive people asymptomatic. The restrictions, which affect more than 6 million people, are due to start from midnight Friday and last for five days. However, it does not concern the area of the iPhone factory, the largest in the world, where workers have already been subject to restrictions for several weeks.

Violent demonstrations

This decision was taken after the beginning of violent protests in this factory. They would have burst because of a problem around the bonuses of the workers. Nevertheless, pseveral employees are also exasperated by the living conditions “chaotic” on the site due to anti-Covid restrictions, said a worker interviewed by AFP.

Last month, workers, panicked by the unexpected confinement of the factory, had fled the site on foot, some complaining of the disorganization reigning on the spot.
