Cheers to the Eagles

Aplausos a las Águilas

Damn, the Dominican baseball teams are always “bombed” for the little they do, supposedly, in favor of the state stadiums in which they play, without paying rent. Many require them to invest in their upkeep, which they actually do on a regular basis.

Now we have the example of the Águilas Cibaeñas that began a total reconstruction of the Cibao Stadium pitch, which has always been rated as one of the worst in the league (the pitch), as it is said to be very hard and uneven, including the gardens.

They say that there have always been fielding problems, forward and backward, due to existing irregularities. True or not?

Now, the Eagles invest 4.5 million pesos to fix the land and that sounds good inside Lidom. The Eagles contribute everything, as confirmed by their president Quilvio Hernández.

It would also be healthy for the teams from the capital, San Pedro de Macorís and San Francisco de Macorís to make some joint investment plans to bring about improvements and modifications that are needed.

As which? Club houses are always a major concern, and in San Francisco and San Pedro, bleachers need to be expanded. That should include the joining of the bleacher stands and areas above the dogout and eventual disappearance of the (very ugly) holes that appear in those areas.

Hopefully others will imitate the eaglet example and approach the government to help with such investments.

COCORIGAMO: I asked Google the meaning of the word Cocorígamo and its answer was like this “it is something that is complicated to solve, that is not easy to solve”.

I use that term to refer to last week’s announcement that Cuba and Curaçao have been invited to the upcoming 2023 Caribbean Series, which will be held in Caracas, Venezuela. And why is it complicated, at least in my eyes?

1st. Because according to what the Caribbean commissioner Juan Puello tells me, the decision was made by the host country, Venezuela, which has authority “because they assume their expenses.”

and 2nd. because that was not weighted properly and in advance, before all the leagues, including Mexico and the Dominican.

In summary there is a mess in process and in the next few days there will be news about it. Because that has “cocorígamo”.

NEW PITCHER: It turns out that in last Sunday’s activity, the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Giants 15-6. At one point, the Giants called in Albert Pujols, who was in the DH role and was 3-2. In total, Pujols pitched one inning, but before the last out he had allowed 3 hits, gave a base, scored 4 runs and hit two home runs, the Mexican Luis González and Joey Bart, catcher. He threw 27 pitches and everyone had fun except Alberto. Was this true or is it a joke?

Here are some reactions from some colleagues collected this Monday on twitter:

LUICHY SANCHEZ: Albert Pujols pitching? I better not think. @EJerezESPN. God protect him from a line!

HECTOR CRUZ, ESPN BORIGUA JOURNALIST: I really don’t know what to think about seeing a legend like Pujols making a fool of himself on the mound. To see things like this, better implement the knockout rule and stop the clowning!!!

FERNANDO ALVAREZ: VENEZUELAN JOURNALIST FROM ESPN: Albert Pujols has no need to expose himself in this way and I speak in the full extent of the word. #FerPlay

ESPN’S LUIS ALFREDO ALVAREZ: Yesterday we witnessed one of the biggest stupidities in MLB history. Albert Pujols pitching.

OF INTEREST: Juan Lagares signed a minor league deal with the Angels, the same club he played for last year. Robel García, former hawk and now from the Toros del Este, has been playing triple A for the Chicago Cubs, in Iwoa. He is batting .291 with 9 home runs. Johnny Cueto returned to the majors last night with the Chicago White Sox. He pitched against the Kansas City Royals in his first appearance of the year after a triple-A stint. Cueto is 36 years old and has a career record of 135-97 in 14 years. His ERA is 3.45. In 2021 his mark was 7-7 and 4.08. Joe Biden says that he restores flights to Cuba and also removes the limits for sending remittances. Later, if Donald Trump becomes president again, he erases all that. Then in Chile they approved a project that removes the name of a woman to call her a “menstruating person”. And there are still people who doubt that the world is crazy.
