CFE Unveils Comprehensive Plan to Prevent Energy Theft in Mexico’s Electrical Grid

Mexico’s power grid has been struggling with outages, droughts, and energy theft. The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is stepping in with a massive overhaul plan.

Modernizing Mexico’s Grid

The CFE is launching 158 strategic projects worth over $5500 million by 2030. This investment aims to modernize the national electricity transmission network. The plan includes digitalizing more than 110,000 kilometers of transmission lines to monitor and control the grid better. This move is expected to curb energy theft and improve overall efficiency.

To achieve this, the CFE has partnered with General Electric Vernova to introduce GridBeats, a software solution that uses advanced sensors and artificial intelligence. GridBeats will predict maintenance needs, detect faults, and optimize grid operations remotely and in real-time. This technology will help tackle the sector’s biggest challenges: reliability, sustainability, and security.

The Mexican power grid is relatively robust compared to other Latin American countries. However, growing intermittent generation and economic development demand greater monitoring and efficiency. As technology advances, energy demand increases, leading some to resort to illegal means to steal energy. The CFE plans to invest 624,600 million pesos as part of its Expansion Plan, which includes new generation projects and strengthening transmission and distribution networks.

Some key targets include:

  • Adding 29,000 Megawatts of capacity
  • Building 97 new substations
  • Modernizing over 6000 distribution networks

Currently, 26 projects are under construction and will be completed during this government period. The CFE’s transformation plan aims to create an efficient and secure grid, constantly monitored to prevent energy leaks, theft, and major faults. The goal is to ensure a reliable energy supply for Mexico’s growing needs.
