CFE Announces April Inspections for Electricity Meter Compliance

Electricity is a hot topic right now. Mexico is facing a drought that could affect the power supply. To keep things under control, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) will monitor meters to ensure they’re working correctly. If your home is on the list, you might get a visit.

Some people try to cheat the system by using devices that manipulate meters. These “diablitos” are illegal and can put your safety at risk. They can also lead to fines. The CFE wants to stop this practice, so they’re planning inspections starting in April. To avoid any issues, pay your bills on time and don’t use any illegal devices.

Why Inspect Meters?

The goal is to prevent irregularities and improve service quality. Authorized CFE staff will visit homes starting in January 2025 to check meters and replace them with newer models if needed. You might get an inspection for a few reasons:

  • Updating your meter to a newer model
  • Lack of a formal contract
  • Using illegal devices or tampering with meters

These inspections are free, but if they find any issues or negligence, you’ll face fines and service suspension. The CFE will update the payment system, so it’s essential to stay informed.

If your service is suspended, you’ll need to pay the fine and reconnection fee. You have 30 days to pay your debt and avoid extra charges. If you don’t pay within 15 days, your contract might be canceled. To reactivate your service, you need to:

  • Pay the outstanding balance
  • Cover the reconnection cost
  • Notify the CFE by calling 071
  • The CFE will restore your service within three days in rural areas or the next day in urban areas

Avoiding Service Suspension

First, pay any outstanding debts immediately. The CFE recommends checking your bills regularly and making payments on time. Using illegal devices can lead to severe consequences if detected during an inspection. The CFE can detect issues by checking the meter’s color.

In summary, CFE inspections can help update or legalize your electricity service. Remember, paying your bills on time is crucial to avoid service suspension. The electricity bill specifies your consumption and the amount to pay, so it’s essential to stay on top of your payments.
