CEPM announces in Fitur its decarbonization with solar, wind and green hydrogen energy

With the installation of 600 megawatts (MW) of new 100% renewable plants, thus decarbonising its generation, the Punta Cana-Macao SA Energy Consortium (CEPM) will be one of the first electricity companies in the world to achieve zero net emissions and contribute to that the Dominican Republic is the model tourist destination at a global level. This plan is part of its “CEPMZero” initiative.

The announcement was made at FITUR 2022, where CEPM received a thank you from the Ministry of Tourism, in the presence of President Luis Abinader, as a tribute to the impact that this company has had on the development of tourism in its 30-year history.

MADRID, Spain- From its firm commitment to clean energy, CEPM will initiate steps to convert its generation to 100% renewable in this decade with more than 600MW of solar, wind, pumped hydro and green hydrogen through an estimated investment of US$1,000 million. With this step, CEPM will be one of the first zero-emission and 100% renewable electricity companies in the world, contributing to being the first tourist destination to become a global sustainable model.

This was stated by the main executives of this company in the framework of Fitur, where CEPM was distinguished in an act of gratitude, by the Ministry of Tourism, in the presence of President Luis Abinader, as a tribute to the impact that this company has had on the development of tourism in its 30-year history.

In his words of thanks, Rolando González-Bunster, president of InterEnergy Group, parent company of CEPM, declared: “As precursors of clean energy in the region, from InterEnergy Group we have always maintained the firm purpose of providing reliable energy solutions, profitable and clean through pioneering projects in all the countries where we operate. We have always been innovative and we face great challenges; For this reason, at COP26 we assumed the commitment to decarbonize CEPM, with a structured plan to achieve it in less than a decade”.

“Our purpose is to promote the transformation of the electrical system in all the countries where we operate, which is why we have systematically invested in 100% renewable energy and low emissions through projects such as the first wind farm in the Dominican Republic, Quilvio Cabrera, in 2011; with District Energy’s first and only project in the Caribbean in 2013; with the commissioning of the largest wind farm in Central America, in Panama, Laudato Si’, in 2015 with 215MW; with the conversion to natural gas of the three units of the Energas plant, in San Pedro de Macorís (DR), in 2020; with the construction of the gas plant, Generadora Gatún, of 670 MW in Panama, with a development portfolio of 1 GW in renewable projects; and the unprecedented boost of electric mobility; just to cite a few examples”, completed the executive.

In this line, Roberto Herrera, executive director of CEPM, highlighted: “Ours is a history of fulfilled commitments and that today are confirmed in our ‘CEPMZero’ initiative, through which the Dominican Republic will be a world reference in the development of renewable energies. clean from our shared commitment to a more sustainable development at all levels towards net zero emissions”.

“As part of this initiative, we also plan to continue promoting electric mobility at all levels, through the migration of our entire corporate fleet and the installation of an increasingly wide network of charging stations for electric vehicles. But, in addition, all the charging stations located in our concession area will be powered 24/7 by 100% renewable energy”, the executive completed.

As explained by Mónica Lupiañez, Director of Renewables at InterEnergy Group: “We are at a key moment for the sector in the development of alternative energies to fossil fuels, through increasingly innovative technologies. Our commitment to lead the energy transition and reach carbon neutrality involves the great challenge of storing the renewable energy we produce, so this project, using green hydrogen, allows us to get closer to this goal”.

For CEPM, a pillar of development and growth is joint work and in alliance with various national and international actors, which is why in this case it has invited the Enertech Holding Company, an investment company and development in clean energy of the State of Kuwait with a long history, which acts as an investor in clean energy in countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
