Cañeros del Este confirm Tony Ruiz as their leader

Cañeros del Este confirman a Tony Ruiz como su dirigente

The Cañeros del Este will once again have the outstanding Puerto Rican coach Tony Ruiz assuming the reins of the team based in La Romana and Higüey, to reach the coveted third crown of the Club.

“It is a blessing to return to the Cañeros family and I thank the entire board headed by Frank Elías, Fred Oscar Imbert and José “Cheo” Suarez, for their trust and support for the third year in the team. It is one more responsibility and challenge” qualified the experienced Puerto Rican coach Tony Ruiz.

Ruiz will be directing the team for the third time, with the clear goal of winning his second League title, this time belonging to Cañeros del Este. In all the seasons where he has participated, the orange team has gone to the semifinals or finals.

He is one of the foreign leaders who have the greatest prestige in the LNB with 31 victories in the regular series, with one more victory to become the absolute leader of this department.

“I have a pending issue, both personally and professionally, I understand that last season we could be champions, but injuries and COVID did not play in our favor. This team is made to achieve great things and I have been watching all our players during the offseason and I am very happy with what I saw “, established the manager.

In the 2021 season, Ruiz was second in the votes for the director of the year award, granted by the LNB. The Puerto Rican foreman has international experience in Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Colombia, the United States and was the league champion in 2014 with the Santiago Metros.

Michell integrates

Former national team Moisés Michell will join the Cañeros del Este coaching staff this season as an assistant. “For me it is a challenge and a dream to return to where I started, without a doubt I thank the Cañeros management for the opportunity and for following up on my work outside the country,” said Michel, who played for the Cañeros in the former LIDOBA (1998, 2001, 2002,2008) and in 2012 already within the LNB.

Michell works in the United States with the College Life Christian Academy team where he has won three state championships and two coach of the year awards. He is also credited with developing young basketball hopefuls Hansel Emmanuel Salvador, Breylin García and Ángel Pimentel Montás outside of the Dominican Republic.

He will seek to acquire knowledge under the direction of Puerto Rican Tony Ruiz, whom he described as a great strategist and already understands that he will learn a lot by his side. The technical staff is completed with Víctor Avilés, Anardo Zorrilla and Wander Ortiz as compiler.

The National Basketball League will start on Wednesday, May 25 with the participation of all the traditional teams that make it up.
