‘Canelo’ Álvarez, tras una ausencia de 12 años, volverá a pelear en su país

After 12 years, Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez will fight again in his country.

The Mexican champion announced on his social networks that next May he will defend his super middleweight crowns from the four most important organizations in the world.

Álvarez, 32, has not fought in Mexico since November 26, 2011 when he fought in the Plaza de Toros México, in the country’s capital, to defend the World Boxing Council super welterweight world championship.

“I am ready to return home to defend my titles in the place where I was born and my story began with the people who have always supported me in May of this year I will fight for Jalisco to defend the greatness of this land,” said Álvarez in the video spread on their official social networks.

“Canelo”, considered one of the best Mexican boxers in history, was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, a city in western Mexico that celebrates two centuries of its foundation.

“There are two centuries of struggle written by men and women,” said the governor of that state, Enrique Alfaro on his Twitter account. “We want to honor the past with those who uphold the name of Jalisco in the present.”

Although Álvarez did not give a specific date for the show, he usually fights the weekend closest to May 5, a date in Mexico that celebrates the triumph of the Mexican army during a French invasion.

The Mexican star is currently the reigning champion in the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO super middleweight division.

Álvarez had his most recent fight last September when he prevailed over Gennady Golovkin, in the last fight of his trilogy against the Kazakh.

Neither the rival nor the venue of the fight was announced. In 2011, before fighting in Plaza México, Álvarez fought at the VFG Arena, which is located in the suburbs of Guadalajara. That city also has the Jalisco and Akron soccer stadiums, headquarters of the Atlas and Chivas teams, respectively.
