A missing mark. Former Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi did not attend her trial reopening on Monday (September 13) for health reasons, her lawyer said. Min Min Soe for AFP. As head of a civilian government, Aung San Suu Kyi was ousted last February in a military coup, which plunged the country into chaos.

Under house arrest with little outside contact, Aung San Suu Kyi, 76, faces a series of charges that could land her in prison for more than 10 years. His trial for violating coronavirus health restrictions and illegally importing walkie-talkies should be resumed after a two-month hiatus.

Aung San Suu Kyi returned home after a pre-hearing meeting with her legal team as she suffered from “travel sickness”, said his lawyer Min Min Soe. “It’s been two months since he’s been driving a car. That’s why he got seasick today (…) He said he needed to go home and rest well”, she added. “We are very concerned about his health”, added Min Min Soe, according to which Aung San Suu Kyi is continuously followed by a doctor and a nurse in her place of residence.

In July, two witnesses for the prosecution did not appear at the last hearing after being infected with the coronavirus, amid the third wave of the epidemic in the country. The former leader and her team have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 since they were taken into military custody, her lawyer told AFP in July. The junta has launched a brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protests and its forces have killed more than 1,000 civilians so far, according to a human rights monitoring NGO.
