The rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool is as well known as that between, for example, Real Madrid and Barcelona. In England the clashes between the two are the equivalent of the Classic of our football. Last night in the Premier this duel was lived, although indirectly. United faced Chelsea with the possibility of closing their qualification for the next Champions League and, incidentally, leaving the reds out of it. Finally this is what happened with the victory of the red devils and Liverpool was left out of the top European competition after six consecutive seasons qualifying.
Bruno Fernandes, star of United, did not bite his tongue after the game and admitted that the fact of leaving the eternal rival out of the Champions League weighs almost as much as the fact of qualifying itself: “We know that it means a lot to the fans. For us it is about achieving our goals. We knew we’d be happy Liverpool aren’t there too. (in the Champions League), but for us it’s about getting the best,” he said.
Fernandes also referred to the possibility of winning the FA Cup, which would again mean killing two birds with one stone, since if they did, they would frustrate Manchester City’s aspirations of achieving a historic treble: “It’s about winning the trophy. We have to take the trophy from someone. We want to win the FA Cup. We know it’s very important here. We know that if we win it we stop the option of City getting the treble, but for us it’s about getting another trophy”.
