Christian Yelich drove in the go-ahead run with a seventh-inning single, Brandon Woodruff struck out nine and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Boston Red Sox 4-1 on Friday in their first return to the city in eight years.
Andrew McCutchen scored on a fielder’s choice and Tyrone Taylor had a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.
The Brewers improved to 6-1 since the All-Star break and won their first game at Fenway Park since completing a three-game interleague sweep in April 2014.
The board had remained blank until the sixth inning when the Brewers punished rookie Brayan Bello (0-3) who served a long relief.
Boston manager Alex Cora reconfigured his pitching staff before the game. He relieved Bello, who struggled in the first three starts of his career, and started left-hander Austin Davis.
Davis pitched two innings of control for Boston’s cause and Bello then overcame a pair of bases-loaded predicaments in three innings before the Brewers finally scored in the sixth and seventh innings.
Yelich hit a leadoff double in the sixth inning and scored on McCutcheon’s choice play for the first run of the game.
The Brewers went up 2-1 in the seventh on Tyrone Taylor’s 3-pointer with two out. Taylor’s drive went into the dreaded triangle near center field at Fenway Park.
Woodruff (9-3) pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks.
For the Red Sox, Puerto Rican Christian Vázquez 4-2, one scored. Dominican Franchy Cordero 2-1. The Venezuelan Yolmer Sánchez 4-0.
For the Brewers, Dominican Willy Adames 5-3, one produced. The Mexican Luis Urías 4-0. Puerto Rican Víctor Caratini 2-1, one scored.
