The team from Vitoria discarded Kurucs after the return of Hommes and Enoch to the team. The first appeared from the first part but the second did not, throughout the game. Nor did Raieste play. The one who did make an appearance was Ulanovas, who went to the locker room with 16 points and 20 credits valuation. The Baltics endorsed Joan Peñarroya’s men 44 before the equator, so it was evident that they were not at a high defensive level.
Dani Díez re-entered the starting five. The match was fairly even in the middle of the first act (11-11) but the Kaunas team pressed in attack, with good percentages from three-pointers, and went a bit further (13-18). A good final effort allowed the local team to finish the first installment with a 21-20 score. The Lithuanians from Baskonia (Giedraitis and Sedekerskis), very discreet in front of their compatriots.
In the 13th minute of the game, Baskonia had not taken a single free kick, a circumstance that Peñarroya did not understand. From a tie at 29, they went to 37-42 with two remaining for the break. The Cazoo could not find ways to score, quite the opposite of the Zalgiris with a good Evans and a very inspired Ulanovas. The rebound was dominated by the Baltics (13/16) and the 42-44 half-time was a lesser evil. The partial of the second installment was 21-24.
The people from Alava began the third quarter with ridiculous losses, which catapulted Zalgiris a bit (45-51, min. 25) but since the tie at 54 a few minutes later, there was no story. Costello began to stand out in defense and attack and the people from Vitoria signed a run of 12-2 that began to lead them to victory. The 64-58 at the end of the third act brought optimism to the stands.
In addition, the Basque team shot up in the final quarter and reached the maximum difference with the final figure, 20 up. To Kotsar’s consistency and Costello’s accuracy were joined by Hommes and, above all, Thompson. It seemed that the Lithuanians got carried away in the last ten minutes and ended up paying dearly for it. The average is important because the two rivals now have a balance of five wins and four losses and could end up tied. Starting Ulanovas and Evans after the break tried to avoid disaster but ultimately failed.
