Bangladesh News: The death toll in a boat capsized in northwestern Bangladesh on Sunday rose to 49 on Monday. Most of the dead are children and women. Let us tell you that Hindu devotees were on their way to Bodeshwari temple on the occasion of Mahalaya ahead of Durga Puja festival on Sunday when the boat carrying them overturned in the Koroto river in the north-western Panchgarh district of the country.

Relatives claim – 58 people still missing

According to the news of BDNEWS.COM, Dipankar Roy, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Panchgarh said that till 5 pm a total of 43 bodies were recovered. However, 41 people are still missing. Roy is heading the inquiry committee set up by the district administration. Another official said some bodies were found in a river in Dinajpur. The bodies were reportedly washed away due to the strong current. Later, six more bodies were recovered from the Korota river, taking the total death toll to 49, according to Dhaka Tribune newspaper. These include 13 children, 24 women and 12 men. Roy said the bodies recovered have been handed over to their families. Media reports quoted relatives of the passengers as saying that around 58 passengers were missing, while officials had earlier said there were 80 passengers on board. Witnesses claim that more than 150 passengers were on board the boat. Some people swam back to the banks of the river, but many are still missing.

Why the boat sank will be investigated -Soleman Ali

The Dhaka Tribune newspaper quoted the head of the investigation body, Roy as saying, “As per the initial investigation, there were more people in the boat than capacity”. There could be other reasons too, but it will be revealed after the committee completes its investigation.” Soleman Ali, the administrative head of the sub-district, said, “The sailor has taken some people to reduce the weight in the boat. But no one listened to him.” Roy said the fire service is leading the search operation in Panchgarh.
