Australiërs kunnen nu benzine en donuts met crypto kopen

Gradually, more and more shops are accepting payments with cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin (BTC) and ethereum (ETH). It is now possible to pay for your petrol in Australia with crypto, and soon also for donuts. That will follow after a new collaboration between the Australian gas station chain OTR, DataMesh and the major exchange Crypto.com.

Paying with crypto at the gas station

Customers can now pay with their Crypto.com wallet in Australia at 175 OTR filling stations with associated stores. Customers can now buy their petrol, coffee and sandwiches with crypto here. They can do this by scanning a QR code with the Crypto.com app.

OTR’s parent company Peregrine also plans to roll out this new payment option at more retail chains under the same umbrella, including the well-known donut specialty store Krispy Kreme. In total, another 250 stores should be given the option to accept payments with crypto.

You do not have to sell your coins for Australian dollars first with the transaction, but the crypto will probably be converted to AUD immediately as soon as they are from OTR. However, it is not clear who the trading costs are for.

In any case, there will be quite a bit of enthusiasm for the possibility. More than half of all consumers would like this payment option, according to a new survey. 55% of respondents say they will start paying in crypto immediately or expect to do so within a year, Karl Mohan of Crypto.com reports:

“Our latest research shows that 55% of both merchants and consumers want to transact in crypto and this innovation within OTR stores is bringing these ambitions to life and putting Australia at the forefront of the evolution of crypto payments.”
