Austin Hedges breaks tie in Guardians win over Rays

Austin Hedges rompe empate en triunfo de Guardianes sobre Rays

Austin Hedges hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the fifth inning to help the Cleveland Guardians beat All-Star starter Shane McClanahan and the Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 on Sunday.

Cleveland won its first series against the Rays since August 2017 and ended a long road game streak of 6-5.

Reliever Kirk McCarty (2-2) allowed one run on four hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings. Emmanuel Clase pitched the ninth inning for his 23rd save.

McClanahan (10-4) gave up five runs on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings — tying a season low. His major league-best 1.76 ERA dropped to 2.07 and the left-hander stopped his streak of six or more innings with two earned runs or fewer in 13 games.

David Peralta, acquired from Arizona on Saturday, started in left field and went 1-for-4 in his Rays debut. Tampa Bay is 3-7 after the All-Star break.

For the Guardians, the Dominicans Amed Rosario 5-1, José Ramírez 5-1 with an RBI, Franmil Reyes 5-1 with a run scored. The Venezuelan Andrés Giménez 4-0 with a run scored.

For the Rays, Cubans Yandy Díaz 5-0, Randy Arozarena 3-1. Venezuelans David Peralta 4-1, René Pinto 3-0. Mexican Isaac Paredes 4-2 with two runs scored.
