At least 44 people have died in a fire at a shopping center in Bangladesh

At least 44 people, including 26 women and three children, died in a fire this Thursday According to authorities, it is a seven-story shopping center in the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka.

Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen has reported that 33 bodies have been transferred to Dhaka Medical University Hospital while another ten are at the National Institute of Burns and Plastic Surgery.

The body of another man was taken to the central police hospital in the Rajarbagh residential area, according to Inspector General Chowdhury Abdullah al Mamun, local newspaper The Daily Star reported.

The fire broke out at around 9:50 p.m. (local time) at the Kacchi Bhai restaurant in the Green Cozy Cottage shopping center., located on central Bailey Street. Several people were rescued by passers-by using a ladder until almost 13 fire departments arrived on the scene.

Although the cause of the fire is currently unknown, initial investigations point to a gas stove in the restaurant on the ground floor. The building only had two elevators and one stairwell without an emergency exit..
