Asia and UN Offer Humanitarian Aid to Thailand and Myanmar After Earthquake

Earthquakes struck Myanmar and Thailand on Friday, causing widespread destruction.

Many countries in Asia are showing support. Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, said his country stands with its neighbors. He offered humanitarian aid and support for relief efforts.

Indonesia’s President, Prabowo Subianto, expressed condolences to Myanmar and Thailand. He said Indonesia is ready to provide support for recovery efforts.

Australia’s Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, said her country is working with regional partners and humanitarian organizations to provide aid.

Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, tweeted that India is ready to help. He ordered Indian agencies to be prepared to respond.

New Zealand’s Foreign Minister, Winston Peters, and Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry also expressed condolences.

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, said the UN is mobilizing relief efforts.

Death Toll Rises

Myanmar reported 694 deaths, 1,670 injuries, and 68 missing people. Thailand reported at least 9 deaths and 101 people missing or trapped under rubble after a building collapsed in Bangkok.

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake had its epicenter in Myanmar’s Sagaing region. A 6.4 magnitude aftershock followed 12 minutes later, according to the US Geological Survey.
