Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said on Saturday that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif will appoint a new army chief in time in November. A few days before Asif’s statement, former Prime Minister Imran Khan had demanded that the new army chief should be appointed by the new government after the elections. Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, 61, will retire on November 29 and his successor is likely to be announced by the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is legally authorized to appoint the Army Chief. “Nawaz Sharif has done this political responsibility four times and Shahbaz will do the same thing in November,” Asif said in response to a question at a press conference here.

The current army chief, General Bajwa, has been at the top post of the army for six years. He was appointed army chief in 2016.
