Apple will increasingly be Apple with proprietary 5G modems in 2023

Apple will start using proprietary 5G modems from 2023.

The company’s strategy is to develop its own components and become independent from brands such as Qualcomm and Intel.

The iPhone 2023 can now integrate Apple’s proprietary modem

Starting in 2023, Apple will start using proprietary 5G modems that may already be included in iPhones that will be released on that date. The information is being released by the Nikkei Asia website, which adds that it will be the Taiwanese manufacturer TSMC that will produce the Apple-designed modems.

In fact, with this option, the Cupertino company wants to have more autonomy and become independent from brands such as Qualcomm or Intel, for example. In fact, this is a strategy that is not surprising if we go back a bit in the years to 2019.

It was precisely in that year that Apple acquired a large part of Intel’s mobile area, specifically the area dedicated to the development of 4G and 5G chips and modems. The purchase was valued at $ 1 billion and allowed Apple to begin its journey to avoid reliance on third parties for component development.

Apple is working on its own power management chip

With the new revelations, Cupertino’s strategy appears to remain unchanged. According to sources close to the project, Apple “is developing its own components to handle radio frequencies and millimeter waves to complement the modem.”

But in addition, it seems that Tim Cook’s company is also working on its own power consumption management chip, developed specifically for the modem. As is Apple’s custom, the attempt will be to optimize existing technology.
For some time, the most varied experts and analysts point out that Apple will change its modems until 2023, and these latest revelations confirm the prophecy.

Apple’s proprietary modems will have started the testing phase

Qualcomm, for its part, did not comment on the matter. Although a few weeks ago I let you know that in 2023 Qualcomm would only provide modems to 23% of iPhone units. According to the manufacturer, Apple will continue to use Qualcomm modems in its iPhone models, but only in select markets, as of this date.

Also according to sources linked to the project, Apple will have already started a test phase for its proprietary modems that can benefit from 5 nm recording. And if all goes well, next year Apple’s SoCs will already switch to 4nm, and iPad 2022 models will get a 3nm recording process.
