Apple could adopt screen with e-ink technology in its folding iPhone

Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo made new statements about the possible foldable iPhone. According to him, Apple could use screens with electronic ink technology for this device.

This type of panel would apply to the outer screen of Apple’s foldable device. A decision that would undoubtedly bring immense benefits to the energy consumption of this equipment.

Apple is testing E Ink’s Electronic Paper Display (EPD) for future tablet-like applications and foldable device cover screens. The color EPD has the potential to become a mainstream solution for the must-have cover/second screen of foldable devices due to its excellent power savings.

Apple wants to increase the autonomy of its products with color electronic ink screens

Ming-Chi Kuo’s testimony tells of Apple’s efforts to develop a color electronic ink panel. He affirms that the objective of this project will be its application in future folding equipment of the brand.

Therefore, the so-called folding iPhone could be one of the beneficiaries of the technology that Apple is working on. It would be an excellent choice for an outdoor screen that shows the user essential information such as the time and some notifications.

Instead of using an OLED panel like Samsung, with higher power consumption needs, Apple can opt for a less power greedy solution. The result would be much greater autonomy than opting for a traditional screen.

This would be possible because the electronic ink technology does not consume energy while displaying static content. For a screen designed primarily to display information such as hours or the number of notifications received, this is a solution with enormous potential.

Ming-Chi Kuo even believes that this could become the standard in the foldable smartphone market. In other words, he believes that other brands with a presence in this market can also adopt electronic ink screens to enhance the autonomy of their products.

Note, however, that nothing guarantees us that Apple will even apply this solution to its foldable smartphone. It is a very interesting hypothesis, but it is still being tested by the engineers of the American company.

As for the launch of the first folding iPhone, it is still too early to know when it will happen. Data advanced by Ming-Chi Kuo himself reveals that this launch will not occur before 2025.
