Any attack on a nuclear plant is ‘suicidal’, warns UN chief

Cualquier ataque contra una planta nuclear es "suicida", advierte jefe de la ONU

Any attack on a nuclear plant is "suicide"United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned on Monday after a new bombing hit a nuclear complex in southern Ukraine.

Ukraine and Russia blame each other for the attacks on the Zaporizhia plant, Europe’s largest nuclear complex, which has been under Russian control since March.

Friday’s clashes at the nuclear power plant led the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Argentine Rafael Grossi, to warn of "a very real risk of a nuclear disaster".

At a news conference in Tokyo, Guterres condemned the attacks without holding any party responsible.

"We support the IAEA in its efforts related to creating the stabilization conditions for that plant"said.

"Any attack on a nuclear plant is a suicidal thing. I hope that these attacks end and, at the same time, I hope that the IAEA will be able to access the plant"he added.

The UN chief spoke after visiting Hiroshima over the weekend, where he gave a speech on the 77th anniversary of the world’s first atomic bomb attack.

The 73-year-old Portuguese also issued a stark warning of the horrors of atomic weapons a week ago in New York, during a key Nuclear Non-Proliferation Agreement (NPT) conference on Monday.

"Humanity is one misunderstanding, one miscalculation away from nuclear annihilation"said before urging the world "get rid of its nukes" since it is the "only guarantee that they will never be used".
