Seoul: South Korea’s president has announced a pardon for the vice chairman of the technology company Samsung, JY Lee, who was convicted on bribery charges.

According to foreign media, the President of South Korea has announced amnesty for about 1,700 people, including Samsung Vice Chairman JY Lee, Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong, yesterday. He has announced amnesty for businessmen and other people on the occasion of Korea’s Independence Day, all these people will be given presidential amnesty on August 15.

There were earlier reports that the president would also announce a pardon for 81-year-old former president Lee Myung-bak, but his name was not included in the final list.

The South Korean president expressed hope that the special amnesty granted to businessmen would help tackle the country’s economic crisis. He said that the vulnerable members of our society, including ordinary citizens and small businesses and traders, who are suffering due to the Corona epidemic, will get an opportunity to work again, which will improve their economic conditions.

On the other hand, on the announcement of the apology, JY Lee said in his statement that thanks for providing the opportunity for a new beginning, now we will try our best to improve the society.

The amnesty announced by the President will clear the way for JY Lee to take over the company.

It should be noted that JY Lee was sentenced to 30 months in prison in 2021 on bribery charges, he was released on parole last year after serving 19 months.

In 2017, JY Lee was accused of bribery, corruption and fraud with the then South Korean president.

Recall that JY Lee was accused of using his influence over the former president for Samsung’s business interests. A Korean court sentenced him to 5 years in prison in 2017, but in 2019 South Korea The Supreme Court overturned the verdict and ordered a new trial.

After a new trial, the court sentenced JY Lee to two and a half years in 2021 on bribery charges.
