Vienna: The Austrian government has warned that the cars of speeding drivers will be confiscated and auctioned, a move aimed at discouraging car racing.
In this regard, the local authorities say that they are trying to control traffic accidents and other incidents caused by illegal street races and excessive speeding in the state.
According to officials, car racing incidents not only cause the death of young drivers, but sometimes innocent bystanders are also injured by being hit by vehicles.
Greens transport minister Leonore Geussler said in a statement that racing cars become uncontrollable weapons and endanger the lives of innocent people.
He clarified that if any citizen is caught driving over the prescribed speed limit, his vehicle will be impounded by the government for two weeks as per the law.
He further said that if the above-mentioned citizen is again caught by the law while committing the same crime, his car will be taken into government custody and auctioned.
He clarified that after the auction of the impounded cars, 70% of the proceeds will be given to the Road Safety Fund and 30% to the concerned local authority, apart from the fine for the impounded vehicle.
