America Vs China: A high-level US Navy official criticized Beijing’s increasingly aggressive actions in the South China Sea. China hit back at it on Friday, saying it was the US military deployment in disputed waters – which it called a “shipping intimidation” – that could lead to a confrontation. The Chinese embassy in Manila said it strongly condemned US Navy Chief Carlos Del Toro’s remarks. In which “baseless allegations against China and malicious statements were made, it increased the “threat to China”.

“Beijing encroached upon the sovereign waters of its Asian neighbors”

In an interview Tuesday during a visit to Manila, del Toro outlined how Beijing violated international law. He spoke of how Beijing has encroached upon the sovereign waters of its Asian neighbours. He reassured Asian allies, including the Philippines, that the US military’s importance in the Asia-Pacific region, especially in the disputed South China Sea, will never diminish. And in fact, despite the war in Ukraine it has escalated.

“US trying to escalate differences and stir up tensions”

However, the Chinese embassy has reacted strongly to this. He said the US military’s deployment was aimed at “showing off force, causing military provocations and creating maritime and air tensions,” and to create “navigational intimidation” in the name of freedom of navigation. “In an effort to maintain its hegemony, the United States is intensifying the show of power in the region, and is deliberately seeking to escalate differences and incite tensions,” the embassy statement said.
