Alpine boss Laurent Rossi reveals details of why Fernando Alonso leaves the team

The president of the French team acknowledged that they did intend for Alonso to stay, but not under the conditions that he demanded. Rossi made it known that the Spaniard wanted a contract of more than two years, something that the Alpine F1 team could not afford. But he also revealed why.

“We couldn’t commit for more than two years because with Piastri we had an option of more than three years. In the long term, it was always clear to us that we had to focus on the future and the future was called Oscar.” Likewise, he added. “We offered Fernando the most we could. That was a one year contract plus one. We wanted to keep the man of the present and ensure the man of the future”, Rossi sentenced.

Behind Fernando Alonso’s decision to leave Alpine, his current boss severely criticizes him

Until December 31, 2022, Fernando Alonso remains a driver for the Alpine F1 Team and Laurent Rossi knows it. However, that does not prevent him from being dispatched against the Asturian runner regarding the decision he made, which for the French boss is a wrong decision, and more so at the age of the Spaniard.

“Do you think two or three years make a big difference for him? He will now go to a racing team that is ninth in the World Championship. That means rebuilding the work he has already done with us. Alpine would certainly have been the least risk for him in sporting terms. Fernando’s time is also limited” declared Rossi.
