Alberto Contador: “If Pogacar were in the Giro, perhaps the film would be different”

Alberto Contador:

Bike to the car and change, after completing the ascent to Monte Bondone, end of the 16th stage of the Giro d’Italia, in one of its brand new AURUM. Alberto counter will be seen again in a third week of the Giro full of commitments on his agenda: recognition of Monte Lussari, interviews and the queen stage next Friday on a motorcycle for Eurosport, photos and autographs for the typhosi… And, as usual, chatted with AS for a few minutes of what is being for him is Corsa Rosa.

“It is clear that each Giro is a little different. I think that what most marks the Giro is that the hardness is concentrated in the last week. That’s like when there’s a very tough climb at the end of a stage and the people in the previous climbs don’t move. In this case it is similar, people wait for the last week because they know that almost everything is going to be played there and before that they don’t move”, analyzed the one from Pinto about what has been seen so far, in addition to leaving an interesting reflection: “It also depends of the corridor If we had Tadej Pogacar here, maybe the film would be different”.

“Remco would not have done badly the way the Giro is going, being somewhat more conservative and thinking about the last week. Last year he had a bit of a bad time in the third week of La Vuelta, but it is true that we were left with the question of how he would have been here in the high mountains. We have to wait ”, Contador explained about what the race could have been at this point with the Belgian involved in a battle for the general classification for which he has a favourite: “I think Primoz Roglic, but Almeida can surprise.”

How could it be otherwise, the owner of EOLO-KOMETA, together with his friend Ivan Basso, He expressed his satisfaction with the Giro that his squad is signing: “Very happy with the team. In the end, it is a Professional Continental team, with a limited budget. In fifteen stages we have made ten top-10s, one stage victory, even in the final at the top, we have worn the blue jersey for more than half a Giro… We cannot ask for much more, and that one of our men, Fortunato, is not being able to go as well as we would like. The attitude and professionalism so that the team arrived at the Giro in optimal conditions is paying off”.

Personally, after having been a father again last April, Alberto has a new challenge on the horizon as long as EOLO gets a second victory of stage in the remaining five stages of the Giro: “I have thought about doing Rome-Madrid by bicycle, I have come up (laughs). As EOLO-KOMETA wins another stage we are going to do Rome-Madrid, in total, 2,007 kilometers. They are 500 km more than the Madrid-Milan challenge. We still die trying.” Will there be a challenge?
