Agriculture ministers from several countries meet to define priorities in the face of climate change

Dozens of ministers and officials from the Ministries of Agriculture of 30 countries of the Americas, will meet this week in Costa Rica to discuss the strategic role of the region’s agricultural sector in dealing with climate change, prior to the Conference of the Parties (COP27) in November.

The meeting, which will take place on September 22 (today) and 23 (tomorrow) in San José, will be entitled “Challenges of agriculture in the Americas to face the climate crisis.”

According to information, the meeting is organized by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA)with the purpose of serving as a prior instance of regional coordination for the COP27in which the 197 signatory countries of the Framework Convention on the United Nations on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and in which agriculture will have a strong role.

Agricultural authorities in the Americas are expected to identify priority areas for climate action, taking into account the unique role of regional agriculture in leading global efforts on this issue and the benefits that would be generated in terms of food and nutrition security. , poverty reduction, sustainability, water conservation and management, among others.

In addition to the ministers and secretaries, the Vice President of CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, Christian Asinelli, and a representative of the government of Egypt, host country of COP 27.

In addition to the ministerial discussions on the challenges and opportunities for regional agriculture in the current context, the multilateral financial perspectives of the Green Climate Fund will be presented (VCF) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), as well as the way in which the financial mechanisms of the UNFCCC with agriculture and what are its objectives.
