Agreement signed to strengthen oil research

Suscriben acuerdo para afianzar la investigación petrolera

The Dominican Oil Refinery (Refimdosa) and the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (UNPHU) signed a cooperation agreement to promote theexpansion of research work and exploration of oil and gas deposits.

The agreement, signed by the president of Refidomsa, Leonardo Aguilera, and the rector of the UNPHU, Miguel Fiallo Calderón, has the objective of estimate the potential of hydrocarbon resources to be discovered in the basins with interest for oil exploration in the Dominican Republic.

It arises from the implementation of an investigative project in charge of a unit created for this purpose in Refidomsa by Dr. Aguilera, which has been working with a view to determining the existence of hydrocarbons in a commercially exploitable quantity.

This unit is in charge of a team of technicians headed by engineers Ramón Cruz and Gregorio Rosario.

Aguilera stressed that contributing to the investigation of possible oil deposits is a high priority for his administration, which is why, as soon as he assumed the presidency of the Refidomsa Board of Directors, he gave due importance to this line.

“We would do a significant contribution to the energy future of the Dominican Republic if in our management we manage to establish the existence of oil and gas in the national territory, and for this reason we are determined to carry out investigations that will lead us to a successful exploration and eventual exploitations”, Aguilera pointed out.

The rector Fiallo Calderón highlighted the willingness of the UNPHU to put its scientific resources at the service of Refidomsa’s effortand said he hopes that they will end successfully.

Proposal
Refidomsa and the UNPHU will join forces within the framework of the agreement to present a joint proposal to the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (Mescyt) for financing through FONDOCYT, an initiative of that institution aimed at contributing to research.

The project that Refidomsa has defined has a multidisciplinary approach combining basin analysis, petroleum system modeling and mass balance methodology.

Based on the basin analysis, the regional geological model and the input parameters for the modeling of petroleum systems will be defined.
