After the conflict between Ecuador and Mexico, the OAS calls for dialogue and a meeting of the Permanent Council

This Saturday, Mexico demanded “guarantees” for the departure of its diplomatic staff from Ecuador after the police attack on its embassy in Quito led to the arrest of former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, who was a fugitive there and wanted by his country’s justice system.

The shocking operation, which had no immediate precedent worldwide, prompted Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to immediately cut off diplomatic relations with Ecuador for what he called a “flagrant violation of international law and Mexico’s sovereignty.”

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) said in a statement that it “rejects any action that violates or endangers the inviolability of the premises of diplomatic missions” and that countries “cannot rely on rules of domestic law for justification.” Failure to comply with its international obligations”.

“In this context, it expresses its solidarity with those who were victims of the inappropriate actions that affected the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador.”

The organization called for “dialogue between the parties” and considered “a meeting of the Permanent Council of the OAS necessary.”
