Abu Dhabi’s big move, important ban

Abu Dhabi, the largest state in the United Arab Emirates, has decided to ban plastic shopping bags.

According to Emirati media, the ban is being imposed by the Environmental Authority, which will take effect on June 1.

The authority says the decision to ban disposable plastic bags is being made to improve the environment.

The authority warns that if plastic shopping bags are not disposed of properly after use, they can be a major cause of damage to the marine and terrestrial environment, leading to recorded deaths of aquatic life and birds.

The authority said that by 2024, the use of styrofoam-made cups, plates and food containers will also be phased out and a public awareness campaign will be launched.

Citizens will be made aware of the dangers of using plastic bottles, plates and food boxes in the society.
