Abel Balderstone culminates with a victory at GP Beiras

An unbeatable way to end Sunday for Caja Rural-Seguros RGA thanks to another victory in the GP Beiras. After the two victories achieved by Iúri Leitao in the previous stages, it has been the Catalan abel balderstone who raised his arms in the queen stage to rise to second place in the general classification and debut his record in the professional peloton. In addition, Jokin Murguialday also finished among the top ten (7th). Pelayo Sánchez, who led the last day, finished third overall.

After two days with a favorable profile for fast men, the scenario changed with the arrival of the mountain. The ascent to Alto da Torre and the final climb to Serra de Guarda broke the race into a thousand pieces. Both Abel and Jokin were the two assets of the green formation to handle the race situation. They both filtered ahead in a group of about twenty riders when the road got rough.

From then on the attacks were continuous and the two men from Caja Rural-Seguros RGA were able to hold on to the head of the race along with men like Frederico Figueiredo, Pelayo Sánchez or Artem Nych. The latter managed to leave ahead along with Balderstone in a duo that ultimately played for victory. The Russian took the general, but Abel raised his arms at the finish line to add his first success as a professional cyclist. It should be remembered that the first stage was for Burgos BH in a team time trial. The four stages were for Spanish teams.

abel balderstone: “Very happy to release my record, it has been a very demanding race from the beginning. It has gone very quickly to Torre, where the race has been selected. Murgui and I have crowned in the leading group and going down has been crazy because of the cold and rain. Murgui left at the next port with two more and I defended his position until we regrouped again. In the last port they told me from the car to try to attack in any way, I looked for it and I was able to go with Nych to the finish line. He knew that he had the general and I could dispute the stage with him ”.

“It is a very important achievement for me, since I started the year with a knee injury and I had to work hard to get to the level, but I am very happy with the progression. Having run two World Tour events and now having my first year of honors in my first year as a pro is a great success. Now I will go step by step to improve my level in professionals, my next objective will be Mont Ventoux, Route d’Occitanie and I would like to do my best both in the time trial and the route of the Spanish Championships.”
