A year’s worth of rain fell in one day.

Rainfall in Dubai is heavy, with the equivalent of a year falling in just one day. This has caused various floods, turned roads into rivers and affected homes and businesses.

From various videos shared online, it appears that even Dubai International Airport (which was named the second busiest airport in the world) was affected. Due to the severe flooding of the runway, the large aircraft attempted to move through the water.

The floods were so great that people commented on the networks that they looked like moving ships instead of airplanes.

Dubai Airport had to suspend operations due to flooding

Due to heavy rain, the airport suspended operations for almost half an hour this Tuesday. “Operations continue to be significantly impacted,” the airport confirmed. “There is severe flooding on the access roads around Dubai to the airport.”

According to meteorological observations at the airport, nearly 100 mm (4 inches) of rain fell in 12 hours on Tuesday, April 16; According to the United Nations, that’s roughly what Dubai measures in a whole year.

Several cars were also affected.

Not only did the rain affect aircraft, but some people had to quickly abandon their vehicles as water levels rose, completely flooding the streets.

Companies also suffered damage. A video showing water entering a shopping center went viral on social media.

Like the United Arab Emirates, Dubai has a hot and dry climate. Therefore, there is insufficient infrastructure to cope with extreme events.

Will it rain frequently now?

Some specialist media claim that torrential rains could now become more frequent due to climate change.

As CNN reports, “as the atmosphere continues to warm, it can absorb more moisture like a towel and then release it in the form of even heavier torrential rains.”
